GIVEAWAY! Smooth for Summer: Win Laser Hair Removal

With the weather heating up and summer just around the corner, you’ll want to ensure you’re putting your best skin forward this bikini season.

Forget embarrassing waxing sessions, DIY creams or shaving day after day. Now is the time to consider laser hair removal options for soft and smooth skin all season long sans the discomfort and inconvenience of temporary hair loss solutions.

At The SHAW Center, we offer many laser hair removal options to suit our patients’ needs:

LightSheer Duet Laser– The new LightSheer Duet entered the market in 2010 with breakthrough technology that eliminates the mess and minimizes the discomfort of traditional laser hair removal treatment. The treatment is also four times faster than older treatments – both underarms can be done in less than five minutes, the back in less than 30 minutes and both legs in less than 40 minutes!

This new treatment offers such little discomfort that most of our patients forgo topical anesthetic. As the hand piece passes over the skin, you’ll feel warmth and a slight pinch. Post-treatment, some patients experience mild redness on the area treated. On average, five treatments are generally required to get rid of all the hair in the area being treated.

Alma Laser Hair Removal – Considered the “pain-free, hair-free” treatment, the system’s SHR technology and IN Motion protocol heats the targeted area and then SHR’s pulses of energy slowly heat the hair follicles in the skin’s sub dermal layer. A cooling mechanism ensures the skin stays cool and comfy throughout the treatment.

The treatments are quick – 5 to 15 minutes for treatment on a small body part and 20 to 30 minutes for a larger area such as the average man’s back – and require no recovery downtime. Usually six treatments are required to ensure the best results.

Syneron elos System– This treatment serves as a complete aesthetic treatment solution, offering laser hair removal as well we IPL (intense pulsed light) treatments for skin tightening, wrinkle reduction, skin rejuvenation, acne treatments and facial vascular treatment. This system offers the most successful treatment on the broadest spectrum of hair colors, skin textures and skin tones with minimal downtime.

Working Out in Warm Weather

Spring has sprung – so take advantage of the beautiful weather before it gets too hot. Now is the perfect time to amp up your workout by taking it outdoors.

Go take a hike
Literally! The desert mountains surrounding our Valley offer fabulous trails for every skill level. Be prepared before you head out for a hike, however, and research the trails so you know what to expect. Don’t forget to slather on the sunscreen, wear a hat and protective shoes and bring plenty of water.

Park it
Our parks are not only great for kids but adults as well. Many feature exercise equipment right there on site along with instructions as to how to use each piece. Even if your local park doesn’t have specific exercise equipment, you can get a great workout just doing what your kids do – climbing the monkey bars, swinging and just plain running around. Do sprints in the grass and make up your own outdoors routine (jumping jacks, lunges, etc.) as your kids play.

Run, baby, run
You need little more than a pair of supportive running shoes to enjoy a fantastic jog around your neighborhood. Amp up your run by setting it to music with Pandora or the perfect playlist on your smartphone or iPod.

Take an outdoor class
Many fitness organizations offer outdoor classes this time of year. If you’re a new mom, check out Stroller Strides, where you can bring baby along in his stroller as you exercise, or check out an outdoor boot camp or yoga class.

Jump rope
If you are limited on time, jumping rope is an excellent way to tone your whole body in just minutes a day. Get a good quality jump rope from a sports store and set aside 10 to 15 minutes per day to “jump” into fitness!

Get up early
Take advantage of the cool mornings by getting up and doing your workout before work or the rest of your hectic day begins. Many find that working out in the morning is the best time to get it done and out of the way so they are not anticipating (or dreading!) it all day long.

Not Too Late for a Flat, Sexy, Summer Tummy

If you’re dreaming of lying on the beach this summer in a teeny bikini showing off a perfectly flat stomach, it’s not too late to make that dream come true.

We at The SHAW Center believe you should feel confident when you rock your swimsuit regardless of your size. But we also understand that you’ll feel your best when you have the body you desire.

Enter abdominoplasty – or a tummy tuck. This surgical procedure removes excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall, creating a beautifully sculpted stomach.

The tummy tuck is ideal for women who’ve experienced pregnancy or a large amount of weight loss and have loose skin they can’t get rid of despite diet and exercise. It is also ideal for people who are experiencing loss of skin elasticity due to age.

A tummy tuck is a surgical excision of excess skin around the abs. An ellipse of skin is removed between the navel and the hairline of the mons area, eliminating C-section scars as well. The skin above the navel is lifted off the abdominal wall muscles up to the level of the rib cage, then pulled down to the level of the mons and closed. During the procedure, the abdominal wall muscles are tightened, resulting in a narrower waistline.

A tummy tuck procedure lasts about two and a half to three hours and does require some recovery time. Most patients can return to work after two weeks and to more strenuous activity after four to six weeks (sometimes more).

If you’re considering getting a tummy tuck here at our office, please consider this testimonial one of our happy patients posted on Realself.com:

“Dr. Shaw and his team are absolutely amazing! Some may say that plastic surgery is only skin deep, but I completely disagree. After having my son later in life (I was 38) and he was just over 9 lbs. (and I am just 5'1 1/2" and 105 lbs. normally) - I was left with not so beautiful breasts and a sagging tummy - yuck! Dr. Shaw performed Breast Augmentation for me in 2005 - AMAZING... but no matter how much I worked out and lost all of my weight, I would still look in the mirror and feel like I was still too young to look as old as my tummy made me feel. I finally decided (after much deliberation) to have a tummy tuck in December 2011. OH MY GOSH! I wish I would have had this done 7 years ago!! It is so wonderful to be able to go to my closet and find clothes that show off my curves and flat tummy instead of trying to find clothes to hide behind. My husband absolutely LOVES the results too. He loves the curves, the flat tummy, and the restored confidence I have again. No more "lights off"... LOL! Dr. Shaw did an amazing job with pulling in the sides to give me back my hour glass figure, and also did a great job on my belly button.” -- VIEffects

Cover Up When You Go Uncovered!

It’s officially spring! In Arizona, that means our triple digit temps are just weeks away. But don’t wait until then to protect yourself from sun damage.

Protect yourself
Now that warmer weather has you showing more skin, make sure your delicate skin is covered with protective sunscreen. We LOVE our product from Dr. Obagi’s new ZO line of skincare products complete with SPFs. The Oclipse Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30 is composed of natural melanin, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to provide broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection. The product was designed to smooth and prime skin prior to make-up application, resulting in an even overall look.

Give it time
Remember to apply not only this product but any sun protection product about 30 minutes before you go out into the sun. This allows the product to fully absorb into the skin’s multiple layers, allowing it to work more effectively than if you apply it immediately before going outside.

Reapply often
Sunscreen is not a “one and done”process. Reapplication is crucial to ensuring you’re skin is protecting for the entire time you’re skin is exposed to the sun. Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours after the initial application and especially after swimming and/or toweling off.

Apply every day
Don’t save sunscreen for a day at the beach. You should apply SPF lotion every single day and reapply it often if you are out in the sun a lot.

Cover up
Despite the fabulous weather, cover up! A little… If you’re going to be in the sun for an extended period of time, wear a big sun hat or a visor, sunglasses and a thin, airy long sleeve blouse or wrap.

Stay hydrated
In addition to drinking lots of water in warmer weather, keep your skin from drying out by applying a high-quality body lotion immediately after you shower and before you go to bed at night. Carry a travel-size lotion for caring for dry hands, elbows and knees while you’re out and about.

Breast Augmentation Success with The SHAW Center

We don’t like to blow our own horn… we’d much rather let our patients do it for us! And they have. We’d like to share with you some testimonials from some of our very happy patients.

One shared on RealSelf, “I never experienced even the slightest inconvenience along the way. After researching many 'top' plastic surgeons it became quite obvious how courteous, professional, and dedicated Dr. Shaw and his team are. They went above and beyond to set me at ease throughout the process! I recently had breast augmentation and a lift and had been a bundle of nerves leading up to the procedures! I cannot stress enough how EASY the whole process, as well as, my recovery was! Dr. Shaw is a genius and made my entire experience 'a walk in the park'! I had absolutely NO pain following the surgery and was beyond ecstatic about my results... my experience with Dr. Shaw far exceeded any of my expectations and my new body has me feeling more feminine and secure than I ever imagined possible. My loyalty now lies, without question, with Dr. Shaw's expertise and very professional staff!”

Another recommends us to her own daughter. She wrote, “I had my breast augmentation from Dr. Shaw in 1995. I have never regretted my choice. I have never had a problem with my implants. My breasts still look great, completely natural. I've yet to have them replaced. My daughter is scheduled to have her augmentation on the 15th of Feb. and I wouldn't feel comfortable trusting her to anyone else.”

Breast augmentation is one of our specialties. Board-certified Dr. Shaw specifically has more than 25 years experience in breast enhancement surgeries, and we use the latest, most innovative techniques to provide our patients the ultimate in satisfaction with their surgery.

We offer superior-medial pedicle breast reduction and breast lift surgery, resulting in a superior overall breast shape and a "dual-plane" -- "biplanar" breast augmentation technique. This implant placement gives the benefit of being below the muscle without the implant being too high on the chest. Dr. Shaw uses all available types of both silicone and saline implants when performing breast augmentation surgery.

We offer a number of breast enhancement procedures including:
Breast augmentation, known as augmentation mammoplasty, which enhances the size of the breasts as well as shape with silicone of saline implants.

Breast lift, or mastoplexy, involves removing excess skin, repositioning the nipples, reshaping and lifting up sagging or drooping breasts. This procedure can be done simultaneously with a breast augmentation.

Breast reduction is ideal for women whose large breasts cause them neck, back or shoulder pain or restriction of physical activity due to the size and weight of the breast, or whose breasts are sagging due to their weight.

Breast revision refers to breast surgery following a previous breast enhancement surgery to improve shape, symmetry, appearance and feel.

We also offer accredited surgical facilities, high surgical standards and excellent care to our patients seeking any kind of cosmetic surgery or services with us.

The Trends for Spring

Make a statement this spring with your makeup and hairstyle. Go through your vanity and clear out the expired products and start fresh with a fun new color palette.

Bold rosy red lips
Forget natural and nude! Perk up your pucker with a burgundy, rosy pink, coral-orange or any bright shade that complements your skin tone. Remember to keep the rest of your makeup fairly subtle for a daytime look. But feel free to accentuate those bold lips with dramatic eyeliner come nighttime.

Eyeliner for night and day (and try white!)
As for that eyeliner, all types of eyeliner styles are in this season. Go for a smoldering smudged look or a winged line for a defined “cat-eye.” If you dare, try the white eyeliner trend, which can actually make the eyes look brighter and bigger.

Thick, lush lashes
Bat some long, thick lashes this spring by using a lengthening and thickening mascara or growing your own thicker, longer lashes with one of our lash-enhancing procedures.

Au natural eyebrows
Put down those tweezers! A fuller, more natural looking eyebrow is in for spring so fight the urge to over-manicure those bushy brows this season. If you have thin brows, fill them in with a matching pencil to create a fuller look.

Bold color
Blue and green hues aren’t just for the Leprechaun and Easter eggs. Using a thick bold colored pencil, draw a bold streak across your upper eye or, for a subtler look, along your upper lash line.

Rainbow clip-ins or hair color
You don’t want to look like Rainbow Bright (or your teenage daughter), but peek-a-poo color in your hair is still super-hot this spring. Think pink for blondes and blues and purples for brunettes. If you don’t want to commit to bold color, try hair chalk on for size!

Fresh-faced glow
Ditch heavy foundation in favor of light BB cream, which offers coverage while letting your natural glow shine through.

Deep side parts
Bye, bye center part. Say hello to the deep side part, which models have been rocking on the spring runways.

You be you

5 Stay Skinny Tips for Spring

With spring upon us, we encourage you to look and feel your best not just with the aid of cosmetic enhancement but also with natural and healthy changes you can do yourself.

1.     Drink lots of water. Even if you think you’re drinking plenty of water, chances are you can up your intake throughout the day. Drink a glass in the morning when you wake up, before each meal (in addition to during your meal) and before you have a snack as you may be confusing signs of thirst for signs of hunger.

2.     Avoid salt. Salt is hidden in even seemingly healthy foods like low-calorie soups. But salt can cause your body to retain water – resulting in a bloated look and feel. Just one teaspoon of table salt has an astounding 2,325 milligrams of sodium. Instead of flavoring your food with salt, try pepper, hot sauce or a squeeze of lemon.

3.     Get fresh. Springtime is the perfect time to stroll the farmers’ markets for local in-season produce. Get your hands on some fresh fruits and veggies and build a salad for a healthy lunch or dinner based on seasonal and delicious fresh foods.

4.     Avoid over-processed and packaged foods. Pre-packaged foods contain lots of unnecessary ingredients to help preserve their shelf life. Opt for natural choices. One trick – avoid the center aisles of your grocery store. The outer aisles contain the produce, meat/poultry/seafood and dairy while the internal aisles are stocked with bags of chips and boxes or crackers that can be diet saboteurs.

5.     Keep moving. Even if you can’t fit in a power session at the gym every day, take advantage of springs fabulous weather and get moving! Take a walk around the block, hike a nearby trail or ride your bike instead of getting in the car to tackle your errands. Get your whole family in on the activity by chasing them around the park, jumping rope together or playing a family game of soccer. Teaching your kids that being active is fun begins with you!

Too Much of a Good Thing? When Plastic Surgery Goes Too Far

Many people turn to plastic surgery to turn back the hands of time or enhance their look in a natural way. However, there can be too much of a good thing when it comes to plastic surgery.

Need proof? Just look to Hollywood.

Have you heard of the reality star Heidi Montag who had 10 cosmetic surgery procedures in one day back in 2010? The former The Hills star is now only 26 years old but already has admitted that she was “in over my head.”

In an interview with Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush and Kit Hoover in October of 2012, she said of the marathon surgeries, "I would never do it again and I never recommend it for anyone.”

She added, “I wasn't told really the repercussions and what would happen, emotionally and psychically and the pain I would be in. I was kind of in shock."

Cosmetic surgery can help people who suffer with self-esteem issues because of the way they look. But it can get out of hand, as Heidi suggested.

The best thing to do is speak with a cosmetic surgery professional. Our staff at The SHAW Center can help you determine how to achieve a natural beautiful result without going overboard which can sometimes result in a fake or plastic look.

Our experts have the experience and professionalism to guide our patients through the process – properly preparing them for the entire experience including downtime needed for recovery.

We also have in-depth consultations with our patients to ensure that they are getting exactly what they desire – and nothing more without their consent.

With the professionals at The SHAW Center, cosmetic surgery is designed simply to enhance your natural beauty, not change your entire look.

Those Luxurious Lashes...

Everyone loves the look of dark, thick, long lashes. But not everyone has them or can even achieve them through mascara and eyeliner.

Luckily, there are now various products available that allow people to grow eyelashes, eliminating the need for mascara or eyelash extensions.

Latisse – You may have seen celebrities like Brooke Shields and Claire Danes advertising the amazing results of a product called Latisse.

Latisse offers users long-lasting results with their eyelash treatment and promises full, thick lashes that won’t dry out, become brittle and fall out.

Latisse was the first eyelash treatment to be approved and proven effective by the Food and Drug Administration and remains the only one. It is available by prescription only from your cosmetic enhancement professional.

LiLash – LiLash is considered to be the world’s most powerful and fastest-acting eyelash conditioner. The product has been proven to lengthen lashes naturally in four to six weeks.

LiLash is a non-irritating active lash conditioner that you can apply yourself. For the first four applications, you will apply one thin coat at the base of the lashes in the morning every other day. Wait two to three minutes for it to dry then apply your eye makeup and mascara as normal.

After the initial applications, users can apply the product once a day for four to six weeks. Sometimes results can be seen within three to four weeks, sometimes eight to 12 weeks.

LiLash promises visibly longer lashes. Once you achieve the lash length you desire, you can cut back the applications to one to three times per week to maintain that desired length. Maintenance of the product is important. Once you stop using LiLash, your lashes will grow back at their normal rate.

With these two lash-enhancing products available at The SHAW Center, you can have visibly longer, thicker lashes without batting an eye.

Sayonara Spider Veins!

Don’t suffer with spider veins. They can be easily treated with our experts at The SHAW Center.

Spider veins, a common form of vascular malformation, are a result of many things -- heredity, obesity, hormonal influences like pregnancy and simply standing on your feet all day. They are the small red, purple and blue vessels easily visible through the skin. They most often make their appearance on the face, neck, chest and legs.

Though less serious than varicose vein disease, spider veins, which are not considered to be a health risk, are still unsightly and can cause men and women to be self conscious about showing off their legs. And spring is just around the corner! Don’t suffer through another swimsuit season with embarrassing spider veins.

The SHAW Center’s resident vein expert Lisa Trotta, R.N., has been treating spider veins for more than 20 years. There are a few options to treat spider veins at The SHAW Center:

IPL (intense pulsed light) ablation – Intense pulsed light treatments are a non-invasive way to eliminate spider veins with a specific setting for optimal results. Improvements can be seen with minimal pain and risk.

VeinWave microwave ablation – This FDA-approved vein treatment works by emitting a high-frequency thermal energy through a very thin needle. The heat causes the wall of the vein – and the blood within – to break down, collapse and disappear without damaging surrounding tissue. Treatments are just 30 minutes long, nearly painless and need no downtime or recover time.

The treatments may be used in conjunction to offer patients the maximum results.
